Sermon Notes 5-31-2015

Sermon on the mount
The church is way to judgmental!

Lets recap

·      The sermon was Jesus teaching his followers about the law
·      The sermon was Jesus setting the course of His ministry
·      The sermon is as relevant today as ever
o   Some believe its not
o   If your not convinced that the Sermon on the Mount is relevant for us today, you can be sure you will not desire or make an effort to live as Jesus taught.
·      IT takes the help of the holy spirit to do what Jesus is asking us to do
o   Such a righteousness—which includes blessing and loving our enemies—is possible, yes, but only by the Holy Spirit
·      The sermon happened over several days

What is the Sermon on the Mount for??
·      The purpose of the Sermon on the Mount is to demonstrate the kind of teaching—and the kind of living with regard to character and conduct—that should govern the people of God through the power of the Holy Spirit.
o   It show us we cant rely on our selves
o   We have to trust and rely on Jesus
o   We need the holy spirit to live in us
o   We need God to live this life like Jesus
§  With out him it is impossible

Matthew 7:1–6 (ESV)
1“Judge not, that you be not judged.
2For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.
3Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
4Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye?
5You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
6“Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.

Be careful who you judge it might come back to bite ya!
1“Judge not, that you be not judged.

Being merciful is showing graciousness. Judging another person is the opposite of graciousness.
Never to judge another person is arguably the most difficult thing in the world to accomplish. I only know how hard it is for me! To put it another way, judging another is the easiest thing in the world to do.

·      What motivates us to judge others??
·      Is it because we want to help??? Most of the time not!
·      Is it because we feel we are perfect?? We should know better
·      So what causes it??

So why does Jesus teach this???
1. It’s a practical teaching
·      There more we judge others the easier it gets
·      Judging others flows from our sinful hearts
·      And it never leads to anything good

2.    Its almost always counter productive
·      We start off with good intentions but it always backfires
·      People almost always get offended
·      Feelings are hurt and relationships damaged

3. It saves us from Criticism
·      You can stop judging others if you remember the old phrase “What goes around comes around”
·      Think about how much better your relationships could be without your constant judging those around you
·      You can spare a lot of grief with a little tongue control!
Colossians 4:6 (ESV)
Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

4. Save your self some painful consequences!
·      Frankly when you are always judging others it torks people off
·      And your get Gods attention!

Here is a cleaver little acronym to rememeber “NEED”
Necessary? Is it truly necessary to say this?
Encourage? Will it uplift their heart?
Energize? Will it empower their spirit?
Dignify? Will it increase their self-esteem?”

This is pretty self-explanatory! Your playing God!
2For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.
Three things to remember when you judge others!
1. God is listening!
·      God hears every word you have said
·      God does not forget
·      So think before you pass judgment, because I bet you have done the same thing
2. God knows the whole truth about us!
·      We can hide our faults from others but we cant hide our faults from God
3. God is Ruthlessly Fair!
·      God is not on your side or my side
·      God will be fair according to how fair you are

God will show you equal Justice!
·      He will judge you by the standard that you judge
·      He will judge you by the punishment by which you judge others

There are a couple of things I want you to think about when you judge others

1. Why do we judge others?
·      Jealousy
·      Pride
·      Covetous
·      Never for the right reasons, we judge from a sinful heart

And if God will judge us the way we judge others then consider these verses

Matthew 5:7 (ESV)
7“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

1 Corinthians 13:4–6 (ESV)
4Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant
5or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;
6it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.

Trust God, He will Judge rightly!
and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.

1 Kings 3:16–28 (NIV)
16Now two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him.
17One of them said, “Pardon me, my lord. This woman and I live in the same house, and I had a baby while she was there with me.
18The third day after my child was born, this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there was no one in the house but the two of us.
19“During the night this woman’s son died because she lay on him.
20So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I your servant was asleep. She put him by her breast and put her dead son by my breast.
21The next morning, I got up to nurse my son—and he was dead! But when I looked at him closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn’t the son I had borne.”
22The other woman said, “No! The living one is my son; the dead one is yours.” But the first one insisted, “No! The dead one is yours; the living one is mine.” And so they argued before the king.
23The king said, “This one says, ‘My son is alive and your son is dead,’ while that one says, ‘No! Your son is dead and mine is alive.’ ”
24Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword for the king.
25He then gave an order: “Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other.”
26The woman whose son was alive was deeply moved out of love for her son and said to the king, “Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!” But the other said, “Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!”
27Then the king gave his ruling: “Give the living baby to the first woman. Do not kill him; she is his mother.”
28When all Israel heard the verdict the king had given, they held the king in awe, because they saw that he had wisdom from God to administer justice.

·      God him self can find the truth
·      God him self will be the perfect Judge
·      So why do we want to get in his way??

God promises us Justice why then do we get in the way??
·      Jesus is here guaranteeing God’s sense of fair play down the road sooner or later.
·      It is God Himself who is the One who will do the judging.
·      So if we elbow in on His territory without His getting to do what He does best, He immediately notices it!
·      Keep in mind, too, that God’s essential nature is that He is a God of justice.

We want justice right NOW! But its Gods call when and where it happens!
2 Corinthians 5:10 (NIV)
10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.
·      No one escapes Gods judgment
·      God will step in when he wants, where he wants
·      It might be today
·      It might be tomorrow
·      But we must allow God to be God and not get in his way
·      Or he will Judge us in the same way we judge others
·      Are you merciful, kind, or are you harsh, cold, and unforgiving?

4 things to remember about Gods Judgment!
1. You reap what you sow!
·      You sow mercy you reap mercy
·      You sow discord, you reap discord
·      You give much you get much
2. Don’t move in on Gods territory!
·      Judgment is Gods alone
·      We get Gods attention when we move in on his turf
·      He doesn’t need your help!
3. It only a matter of time!
·      It could happen now or latter
·      This life or the next
·      But know one gets away from the judgment of God
·      So if you get a slap on the wrist here count your blessings
·      Or it will happen on the Judgment day!
4. You determine how it will go, when we are judged!
·      And with the measure you use it will be measured to you.
·      How you judge now will determine how you will be judged
·      You show mercy, God will show mercy
·      You show grace, God will show grace
·      You show wrath, God will bring his wrath on you!

So why does God want to be the only judge??

·      Because we cant be fair
o   We are filled with sin
o   We don’t see the whole truth
o   We are self centered, and tend to take the throne
·      God is always for the underdog
o   He steps in for the weak
o   He steps in for the needy
o   He also is harsh on those who mistreat the underdog
·      God wants the world to see who he really is
o   He wants the world to see him a fair and just
o   He wants the world to see that he deserves there worship
o   He wants the world to truly see him as the loving caring father that He is
·      God wants the world to know, that no stone will ever go unturned!
o   No matter who you are
o   No matter your net worth
o   Or social status
o   Will be able to escape gods justice

SO GET OUT OF HIS WAY, STAY OUT OF HIS BUSINESS!
