Sermon Notes 5-24-2015

The Road to Romans!
You have conquered!

Romans 8:31–39 (ESV)
31What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
32He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
33Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.
34Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
36As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”
37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
38For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,
39nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

So Paul finishes off chapter 8 with a reminder
A reminder of why we suffer, why we have to endure in our suffering, why when things get hard, we press forward.

So lets break this down and find out why, even though we may suffer, its worth it in the end.
We all suffer for things that are worth it:
·      We work out to look better, and feel better
·      We go to school to learn more and some day make more money
·      We suffer through a puppy’s life to have a loyal dog
·      We break horses to have something to ride
We suffer for worthy things all the time, and now we see why we suffer for a spot in eternity!

The big man is on your side!
Romans 8:31 (ESV)
31What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

What shall we say to the things and times we suffer??
·      Will we suffer yep
·      Paul and many other Christians before us can attest to that
·      I will assume that many of you in this room today can
·      And Paul starts off with a BOLD statement “what shall we say to things” and then he answers his own question!

If God is for us, WHO can be against us???
·      Here we draw the line in the sand
·      Here we hold fast
·      Here is where we find our strength
·      It is natural to be anxious in the face of trials, problems, and opposition.
·      Despite our fear and anxiety, we need to rest in what we know. God is for us.

Matthew Henry
While God is for us, and we keep in his love, we may with a holy boldness defy all the powers of darkness. Let Satan do his worst, he is chained; let the world do its worst, it is conquered: principalities and powers are spoiled and disarmed, and triumphed over, in the cross of Christ. Who then dares fight against us, while God himself is fighting for us?

He let His own Son die, why would we ever think he would abandon us?
Romans 8:32 (ESV)
32He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
·      God send His own Son to be crucified for us
·      He did not spare him, he let him pay the penalty
·      He loves you that much
·      Look around, ever soul in her was paid for with a huge price
·      Why would God do that and leave you know
·      Why would he not show you grace and mercy
·      Why would he not follow through with what he promised you
·      Will you go through trials YES
·      Will you suffer YES
·      Will he deliver you from absolutely!

No one, one can ever separate you from the love of God!
Romans 8:33 (ESV)
33Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.
·      Let any one that wants bring a charge against you
·      Satan bring it on
·      The world do your best
·      As we fight right now in the world court of public opinion for our faith, let them bring it on
·      All this doesn’t matter, you are the elect
·      Your are the saints
·      You are the adopted children of God

Matthew Henry
He is the judge, the king, the party offended, and his judgment is according to truth, and sooner or later all the world will be brought to be of his mind; so that we may challenge all our accusers to come and put in their charge. This overthrows them all; it is God, the righteous faithful God, that justifies!

The one, who died for us, also speaks for us!
Romans 8:34 (ESV)
34Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
·      No one can condemn you
·      No one can take away what God has given you
·      Your debt, death, was paid for at the cross by Jesus
·      And his resurrection he proof the debt was paid in full

And he sits at the right hand of GOD
·      Jesus not only paid our debt
·      But he sits at the right hand of God
·      He took his place of power
·      And not only does he rule over everything
·      He speaks on our behalf
·      He answers all accusation
·      He looks after us as his children
·      He is the GOOD Shepard tending to his flock and he will not let one get lost
·      He will not let one be taken by the wolves
·      Your future is secure, your salvation is secure
o   He paid the price
o   He bought you on the cross and we will never leave you or forsake you!

There will be hard times!
Romans 8:35–36 (ESV)
35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
36As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

·      We are not exempt from suffering
·      We are not exempt from hard times
·      We are not even exempt for being killed
·      We might even be sheep to slaughtered for our faith
·      BUT NOTHING, NOTHING CAN SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE OF CHRIST!
o   Death can’t
o   Suffering can’t
o   Trials can’t

o   Nothing!
