More Christ crucified, less Dr Phil

More Christ Crucified, less Dr Phil

Here we go again, another touchy subject, but one I think in today’s day and age needs to be addressed that is the obsessive use of psychology over Scripture in our churches.  Be careful to not become a church of pithy quotes and psychological sayings... instead become a church of teaching Christ crucified.  Here is thhe issue with psychology, it has its roots in ancient philosophers like Socrates, Aristotle, and Plato. None of these men were worshipers of the true and living God. At best, they believed in a god that was not involved in the affairs of men, and at worse they worshiped multiple pagan gods.
Matthew 7:17-18:
“Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.”
The root of psychology is secular in nature, for Christians right away we should have in the back of our minds that on its own psychology is bad, and therefore, on its own the fruit cannot be good. The key words are “on its own”, no amount of psychology on its own will help broken people, if it could the almost 64 percent of Americans that actually seek mental health (there are more who would like to, but can't afford it) would have been healed already, but that number keeps rising (mental health care percentages were almost 40 percent in 2004). Only Christ crucified can heal the emotional baggage that comes with living in this world. Jesus didn’t meet peoples physiological needs, He met their spiritual needs through the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 55:1-3).  John 4:24 is specific on this matter, we do not worship Jesus in our psyche, we worship Him in Spirit and Truth.  It's worth repeating, only the acknowledgement and practice of Christ crucified can heal the broken hearted.

In light of this, I hypothesize, instead of psychoanalyzing we must proselytize, we must bring up a church rich in scripture, not Dr Phil, we must bring up a church full of God's love, not love of self.  The four main goals of psychology are to describe, explain, predict and control the behavior and mental processes of others, the last goal is the important one; control, more specifically to control behavior. I ask this about psychology as it relates to controlling behavior, what behavior are we trying to control, and by what means or more specifically to what end?  Biblically speaking, God is the only one who can control the heart of man (Proverbs 21:1 and Proverbs 16:9), so it's logical to say psychology without Christ crucified as the center is no better than as I said earlier, listening to Dr Phil and the like.  Psychology won't change lives for God, at best it makes you feel good about yourself for a short time then you must go back again and again.  Self service or "getting in contact" with yourself is not long lasting, God's love is the only thing that is everlasting (Jeremiah 31:3).  To close; psychology is nothing without Christ and Christ crucified. Do not get caught up in the spirit of the age, preach Christ crucified and let God's love do the rest.
