The Sermon on the Mount!
Sermon 6, The law to a Whole NEW Level

Matthew 5:21-26

Murder where does it start? It's a heart issue!

Matthew 5:21–22 (NIV)
21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister, will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

Let’s unpack this a little!

Vs 21a
“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder,

The Mosaic law

Deuteronomy 5:17 (NLT) “You must not murder

·         Pretty straight forward
·         Nothing new
·         Our court system was based on this law

Vs 21b
and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.

Numbers 35:30 (NIV) “ ‘Anyone who kills a person is to be put to death as a murderer only on the testimony of witnesses. But no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.

·         This was nothing new
·         He was setting the ground work for a different way of thinking

The new law! Jesus ushers in a new way of thinking!

Vs 22a
But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister, will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court.

·         anyone who is angry with a brother or sister, will be subject to judgment
o   He is setting the frame work for how we need to be to change a world
o   Brother and sister refers to other Christians
o   The judgment he is talking about is Gods judgment
o   He is telling His followers it's a heart issue, not the act
o   By the time you act (outward aggression) you have already sinned!

·         Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court.
o   The court He is speaking of is the church
o   Raca means “good for nothing”
o   He is explaining that we are to hold each other accountable, in love, for our inward (heart issue) sins
o   When we go around talking about others accusing them of all sorts of things it's the same as murder!

Vs 22b
And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.
·         It starts with the heart
·         And the sins of the heart lead to Hell
·         Sins of the heart can’t be seen by man , but God sees EVERYTHING
·         Hell!
o   gĂ©enna [Gehenna]
o   a place where body’s were burned
o   false sacrifices are made
o   A Very real place, to describe a Very real place, HELL!

Ok so what is this anger that Jesus is talking about? Let’s explore that for a minute!

Let’s set the record straight, there is Righteous Anger!

Ephesians 4:26 (NIV)
26 “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,

There is good anger, Jesus got angry. But it's how you deal with and your intent in your heart that makes it good or bad!
·         Jesus was pissed off at the religious people of his time
·         He flipped over tables and rebuked them
·         He called Peter the devil!
·         But his heart was pure through it all!
·
Anger should not lead us into sin.
·         It should not lead us into gossip.
·         It should not lead us into violence.
·         It should not lead us into retribution.

It should motivate us toward justice, and the pursuit of repentance and transformation of the sinner

So what is “bad” anger? what does un-righteous anger look like??

Some examples for us to follow!

Matthew 5:23–26 (NIV)
23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

Jesus is saying her that we need to settle matters first with our brothers and sisters

This is why we are all called Hypocrites
·         The world sees how we act
·         The world does not care that you go to church every Sunday
o   They don’t care about your holy hardware
o   They don’t care if you’re here every time the doors are open
o   They care how you act
o   They care what you say
o   They are watching you to see if you walk the walk that you talk
o   Our job is to be Jesus to a dark world!

4 types of anger that get us in the most trouble!

Pride
Proverbs 16:18 (NIV)
Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

·         All anger starts here
·         This is a Self-Righteous Ego
·         Pride is a un-willingness to give-in
·         The world (Satan) thrives on our love of self
·         The original sin was Pride (we wanted to be like God)
·

Jealousy
James 3:16 (ESV)
For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.

·         Gossip lives here
·         People lives can be destroyed here
·         We might convent what they have
·         Or be mad about a promotion
·         And the anger is held in and we use words to hurt
·

Judgmental
1 Corinthians 4:5 (ESV)
Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

·         When we judge others we are playing God
·         It is not our place to be judge and jury that is God’s job alone
·         Anger builds form pride, turns in to Jealousy and ends in us playing God

Matthew 7:1–2 (NLT)
“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. 2 For you will be treated as you treat others.* The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.*

Un-forgiveness
Matthew 6:14–15 (NLT)
“If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you.  But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.

·         When anger turns to un-forgiveness Satan takes hold
·         The anger and bitterness takes deep root
·         It's grieves Gods heart that we won’t forgive
·         There is nothing anyone can do that you can’t forgive
·         We have to be able to forgive so that God can work in our heart
·         We can’t effectively minister to others with a unforgivin, grieved spirit

We live in a cruel unfair world, we will be offended, we will be mistreated, we will be hurt and we will hurt others. We will lose friends and we will walk away from people we love.

That’s why Jesus tells us we must forgive! Without forgiveness we will live in a sea of anger that will consume us. Don’t get caught up in this bait that Satan uses to keep us bond up!
