Sermon Notes 6-17-2018

Matthew Sermon 23
Don’t worry your sweet head about it!

Matthew 6:25–34 (NIV)
25“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?"
26 "Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"
27 "Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin."
29 "Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these."
30 "If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will He not much more clothe you—you of little faith?"
31 "So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ "
32 "For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them."
33 "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
34 "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

I don’t think God wants us to worry!! Why?? Why is worrying such a big deal??

Don’t worry about my life?!?!? It’s the only one I have!!

·     Jesus says, “Do not worry about your life.”
·     You may say: “Why shouldn’t I? It’s the only one I’ve got.
·     James says!
James 4:14 (NIV)
14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

·     We don’t know what tomorrow brings.
·     We don’t know what the next few minutes will bring.
·     So why let our live be consumed by “what if’s”??
o   “What If” I never get the job?
o   “What if” they don’t love me?
o   “What if” my spouse dies?
o   “What if” I lose my job?

We get consumed by the “what ifs” and we never live for the right now!
·     We can’t love completely,
·     We can’t give selflessly,
·     We can’t serve wholly,
·     If we are always worrying about the “What ifs”.

The less we are filled with the Holy Spirit, the more seriously we will take ourselves. The more we are filled with the Spirit—and the closer to God we are—the less seriously we will take ourselves.

When Jesus tells us not to worry about our life, we need to keep the bigger picture in perspective.
·     We are all going to die.
·     So, we must answer the question:
·     Where is my Identity?
o   For some of you, it is your job.
o   Your Possessions.
o   Your children.
o   Your hobby.
o   Your goals in life.
o   Your health.
For Paul,
Philippians 1:21 (NIV)
21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

**Your Identity determines your direction!

Jesus is telling us “our worries are God's Problem”!!

Philippians 4:6 (NLT)
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done.

Here is what Jesus is saying:
·     God will provide for your needs
·     God has your life planed out
o   Don’t let your dreams get bigger than God's plan for you
o   Jesus always followed the path God laid out for Him
·     God has your security (Salvation) taken care of
o   You’re a child of God
o   Your death is inevitable, but your eternity is secure
·     Your purpose is laid out
o   God gave you the skills and talents you need for His purpose for your life
o   Always follow the path God has laid out in front of you, if there is sin in your path it ain't from God!

Some of you are afraid not to worry.
·     You feel you are abandoning your responsibility if you aren’t worrying!
·     You feel guilty if you’re not worrying.
·     If you stopped worrying about something, you run and find something else to worry about!!
·     Some of you have never known a life without worry, it's like a drug to you!
·     It's also like any other sin that can consume your thoughts and minds, your dreams and expectations!
·     It destroys relationships
·     It destroys families
·     It also interferes with your walk with God.

The key to it all!!
Matthew 6:33 (NLT)
33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.
·     The key is kingdom living
·     When we seek Jesus first, and follow what the bible tells, worry can go away.
·     God's peace is given to those who seek His will above their own.
Philippians 4:7 (NLT)
Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
·     Some Peace He gives to us, and sometimes we have to work for it, but that peace is there for the taking!!

Just some good advice!!

Matthew 6:27 (NLT)
27 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?
·     Can all the worry in the world add anything to your life?
·     Can it change anything?
·     The key is kingdom living, working hard at what God sets before us.
·     And let God do the worrying for us.
Matthew 6:34 (NLT)
34 “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today."
·     There is enough stress in the day to day.
·     Why throw extra burden on your shoulders when God says “give it to Me”!
·     What a wonderful gift that’s just waiting for us when we just have faith, and trust in Jesus!

Jesus says, “Do not worry about your life.” If this were a friend, a minister or doctor, a lawyer or accountant giving this advice, you would understandably be confused. But this is counsel from your big brother Jesus Christ.

In fact, God says to you, “I am the One who should be worried. I am the One who made you and saved you. And if you’re a child of God, He says “I am now looking after you!” So God’s word to you can be summed up: Stop putting yourself under pressure that God didn’t put there. His idea what you should do with your life is a far, far better one than your own wishes and aspirations for it—I guarantee it.

Worry is for the unbeliever and rightfully so, but for God's children He is saying, “ I got this”, “ I am in control now”, “sit back and let me lead, you follow and I will bring you through it”!
