Sermon Notes 7-19-2015

Sermon on the mount
Do you want everything you could ask for??
Matthew 7:6

Lets recap

·      The sermon was Jesus teaching his followers about the law
·      The sermon was Jesus setting the course of His ministry
·      The sermon is as relevant today as ever
o   Some believe its not
o   If your not convinced that the Sermon on the Mount is relevant for us today, you can be sure you will not desire or make an effort to live as Jesus taught.
·      IT takes the help of the holy spirit to do what Jesus is asking us to do
o   Such a righteousness—which includes blessing and loving our enemies—is possible, yes, but only by the Holy Spirit
·      The sermon happened over several days

What is the Sermon on the Mount for??
·      The purpose of the Sermon on the Mount is to demonstrate the kind of teaching—and the kind of living with regard to character and conduct—that should govern the people of God through the power of the Holy Spirit.
o   It show us we cant rely on our selves
o   We have to trust and rely on Jesus
o   We need the holy spirit to live in us
o   We need God to live this life like Jesus
§  With out him it is impossible

Matthew 7:7–11 (ESV)
7Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
8For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
9Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?
10Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?
11If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

So what have we learned so far??? (7:1-6)
·      We have seen that we are not allowed to play God by judging others.
o   This is His sole right.
·      We have also understood that judging is best defined as uncalled-for criticism.
o   If you dish out uncalled-for criticism, you will get it back.
o   God Himself will even turn on you for the moment.
·      So it is in our best interest to practice Jesus’ teaching—that if we judge we will get it back, and if we don’t judge, we won’t be judged
·      The plank in us magnifies and blinds: It magnifies the other person’s fault and blinds us to our own problems (sins).
·      We can get involved but with great caution and only after we make sure we aren’t personally involved!
·      Don’t waste your time on folks that aren’t ready
·      Be careful if you do you might get bit!

So I am going to jump around a little in these verses to help you get what this is all about!

I will tell you what it is not!
·      It is not about getting everything you want
·      It is not about material things
·      It is not about you rising to the top!

So lets get to it!

Even bad folks give the basics to their kids!
9Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?
10Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?

·      Most people are good to there kids
·      Most people provide the basic needs of there kids
·      Even serial killers have had kids and raised them to the best of there ability
·      God imprinted this on our hearts
·      To take care of our kids basic needs
·      Even an absentee parent if there kids were with them would make sure they had food and shelter!
·      And I think everyone in this room tries to be a good parent

But earthly parent are limited!
·      Most of us in here have had a bad experience with our parents
·      If you’re a parent you have done things that weren’t the best for our kids
·      Maybe your in debt and cant provide like you would like
·      We are limited by the world we live in
·      We are limited by our experience
·      We are limited by how we were raised

And some of us had bad parents!
·      Maybe you were abused
·      Maybe you were neglected
·      Maybe your dad or mom didn’t stick around
·      Maybe one died early
·      Maybe they were to busy trying to make it that you felt alone, and abandoned

The key to all this is we have a skewed view of God the father
·      We only have a limited view because we have only seen limited parents
·      We have to in the beginning of our walk get a proper view of God the Father
·      That is what the sermon on the mount I think is all about
·      I think Jesus is trying to get us hungry to find out just who God is!
o   He is trying to give us a new picture of what our HEVANLY FATHER is
o   He wants us to crave it, to want to understand just what having a father in heaven means
o   He wants us to know that if we can figure this out we not only have security in eternity we also have joy right here on earth, a little piece of heaven right here!

Here is where I see that!
11If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
Jesus says it right there! We are evil!
·      We are all evil by nature
·      We are all evil because of the fall
·      And even us who are evil try and do right by our kids
·      Never forget that your evil and there is a war inside you
Jeremiah 17:9 (ESV)
9The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
1 Corinthians 15:22 (ESV)
22For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.

Here is where he tells us God is so much more than we know from our earthly experience!
How much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
·      How much more will God look out for you
·      How much more will Jesus work with you
·      How much more will Jesus want what is best for you
·      How much more??? My question to you do you know??
o   Do you know who God is
o   Are you close
o   Do you talk daily
o   Do you study daily
o   Are you hungry to know all you can about the greatest Dad and Big brother any will ever have
·      Or are you just dragging on waiting until you get to heaven?
·      Or do you want everything you could ask for right NOW??? (MAKE SURE TO ASK THIS QUESTION)

I am going to tell you how you get heaven on earth right NOW!

You PRAY!

7Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
Matthew Henry
Here is a precept in three words to the same purport, Ask, Seek, Knock (v. 7); that is, in one word, “Pray; pray often; pray with sincerity and seriousness; pray, and pray again; make conscience of prayer, and be constant in it; make a business of prayer, and be earnest in it.

Ask, and it will be given to you, now on to the prosperity preaching! NOT!
·      Does this mean anything I ask God for I will get! NO
·      Remember he is a good father, the best
·      And he knows what is best for you!
·      God wants you to know him on a personal level, a intimate level
·      And we do that by praying
·      Jesus is telling us here that we are to pray, ask for Gods will, ask for Him to revel our sins
·      Ask him to continue to work on us and for us

Are we not to ask for things, for healing, for others?
·      Sure you are
·      God wants us to open our hearts to him
·      Share our dreams
·      Lift others up
·      But most of all he wants you to learn from him and about him
·      And what better way to get to know some one then to spend time with them!

For everyone who asks receives!
·      There is no unanswered prayers
·      God will always answer you
·      Maybe not the way you think
·      Maybe not what you want
·      But he will always answer a heart that prays

“If you desire more of God, ask Him! Tell Him your heart. Don’t reason in your mind by saying, “He already knows what I want.” Become like a child and ask Him as if He were being informed.”

Are you begging and pleading God with your prayers? You say I will never beg! I say this “you can beg now or you can beg later in hell its up to you! Get humble, geek meek and seek Gods face in prayer!
Some times he answers right away some times he doesn’t so what are we to do until he does??

Seek, and you will find!
·      God is looking for those who want Him so much that they not only ask but seek!
·      He looking for people who wont take no for an answer
·      He is looking for people who look for him everywhere
·      He is looking for people who pray for something until the answer is reveled!

How important is God to you?
·      Seeking is aimed to test our seriousness.
·      For those who say, “I asked, nothing happened,” I say: How important is knowing God to you?
·      How interested are you in having a greater anointing of the Spirit?
·      It is all about God—and wanting more of Him.
·      Seeking is a relentless pursuing of God.
·      As A. W. Tozer has said, we can have as much of God as we want.

Why doesn’t God just answer when I ask!
·      A lot happens on the journey in seeking answers
·      We learn about ourselves
·      We learn about the one we seek
·      Some times the hard we look the sweeter the find
·      God is not betraying you when he doesn’t answer he is teaching you to want more of him and less of you

Things happen when we seek God!
Seeking God goes through stages:
(1) duty—when you know in your heart what you should do;
(2) desire—when there is a yearning to seek Him;
(3) decision—when you stop any delay, only act;
(4) determination—you will not let things hinder you;
(5) discipline—when you overcome any diversion that would turn you in the wrong direction;
(6) discovery—when you find out how real God can be. “I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me” (Proverbs 8:17). “Whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the Lord” (Proverbs 8:35);
(7) delight—the joy of His presence. “You will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand” (Psalm 16:11). It is worth waiting for, worth seeking.

And the one who seeks finds
This is all designed so we seek Gods Face!
·      When we seek his face we revel His heart
·      When we revel his heart, he expose sin
·      When he expose sin we change
·      When we change we start to get a little heaven on earth!

NOW I HAVE TO KNOCK!
Knock, and it will be opened to you

Why knock?
·      We knock to get the attention of one on the other side of the door.
·      Why do we knock on the door to get God’s attention?
·      It is because God requires it.
·      We must never underestimate what a privilege prayer is.
·      We must never take for granted the enormous joy that is on the other side of the door—when it opens.
·      When something is given with ease we tend to not appreciate it.
·      When your knocking you get know Gods ways
·      We get to know him deeper
·      We are not just seeking now, we are pounding on the door
·      We are wanting to be in his presence
·      And the more you get to know him the more you want to know!

Why God wants you to knock!
·      God wants to see just how bad you want it
·      God wants to see who is in it to win it
·      Do you want more of GOD?
·      If you keep seeking and start knocking you get Gods attention
·      If you give up, you may never know what God could have and would have done for you right here on earth

What does knocking look like??
·      When we cry (tears) seeking God your knocking
·      When you fall to your knees seeking God your knocking
·      When you have dome all you can do and beg God your knocking
·      When you wont give up and keep asking your knocking
·      Never stop praying, never stop asking never stop seeking keep knocking
·      Keep pressing, keep pursuing God!

·      The rewards are amazing!
