The Road to Romans!
Disobedience
of the first Adam ruined us; the obedience of the second Adam saves us!
Romans
5:12–21 (NLT)
One mans disobediences, and one mans obedience
12When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.
13Yes, people sinned
even before the law was given. But it was not counted as sin because there was not yet any law to break.
14Still, everyone died—from the time of Adam to the time
of Moses—even those who did not disobey
an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did. Now Adam is a symbol, a
representation of Christ, who was yet to come.
15But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and
God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many.
But even greater is God’s wonderful
grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ.
16And the result of God’s gracious gift is very
different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being
made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins.
17For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to
rule over many. But even greater is
God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it
will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.
18Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone,
but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and
new life for everyone.
19Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners.
But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous.
20God’s law was given so that all people could see how
sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace
became more abundant.
21So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them
to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing
with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
So, our first dad really screwed up!
VS 12 When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone
sinned.
As we read Romans 5:12,
we need to be sure we’re reading it for what it says, not for what we think it says. Let’s take it in pieces
before trying to put it all together.
·
Sin came into the world through one man
·
Death [came
into the world] through sin
·
Death spread to
all people, because all have sinned.
Paul uses these
statements to chart the entrance of sin into the world. Sin came into existence
through one man, Adam.
·
There was a
not-so-great bonus that came with sin: death. When sin entered the world, so
did death.
·
What spread to
all people, sin or death?
·
Paul uses the
word death, not sin.
·
Death entered
as a natural consequence of sin.
·
Death spread
because all have sinned, and the wages of sin is death.
So what can we conclude from this verse?
·
There was no sin in the world before Adam
·
And because of his sin, death entered the world by
way of sin
·
And we all get the penalty of death because of our
sin
·
Paul says death is the penalty for our sins, not an
inheritance from Adam.
·
The
introduction of sin into the world brought about a number of fundamental
changes.
·
Paul’s point in
this section is to trace the path of bloodshed wrought by the entrance of sin
into the world (and into our flesh)
·
As a way to
elaborate on all that Christ has accomplished through His death and
resurrection.
·
More important,
Paul explains why it had to happen
this way, tracing the parallels between Adam and Jesus.
So if we are all going to die because of Sin (no
law) why create on in the first place??
VS 13 Yes, people sinned even before the law was given. But it was not counted as sin because there was not
yet any law to break.
·
Because Adam
brought sin in to the world, death came with it
·
He clearly
disobeyed God (Gen 2:17) (Gods commandment)
·
And death is
the penalty for sin (we all do it)
·
So there was
sin and there were consequences for that sin (you can still be punished for a
law you know nothing about)
·
But here is why
God brought the law
o You can’t pardon someone if there is no law to be pardoned
from!
o God brought the law so he could save us from it
What Paul has in mind here is God reconciling
accounts for the sin committed. Before the law, there could be no accounting (5:13); but
when it did finally come, God chose to exercise His kindness, mercy, and
patience with a view toward repentance (2:4).
VS 14 Still, everyone died—from the time of Adam
to the time of Moses—even those who did
not disobey an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did. Now Adam is a
symbol, a representation of Christ, who was yet to come.
Matthew Henry: He speaks of
death as a mighty prince, and his monarchy the most absolute, universal, and
lasting monarchy. None are exempted from its scepter; it is a monarchy that
will survive all other earthly rule, authority, and power, for it is the last
enemy!
1 Corinthians
15:25–26 (NLT)
25For Christ must reign until he humbles all his
enemies beneath his feet.
26And the last enemy to be destroyed is death.
·
Death will be
hear until Christ returns
·
No one can or
will escape it
·
And that was
proved from the time of Adam until the law came through Moses
·
Think of it as
the old west (it was lawless, but men still got hanged for stealing cattle)
o Even when there was no “law” the law still existed
Adam the
faint symbol of Jesus

Adam had a clear Choice!
“In a world
where there was no sin, a world where there was only good, one man and one
woman made one choice that changed everything.”
In 5:14, Paul
characterizes Adam’s sin as somehow different from ours. Paul later characterizes
sin as living in (and ruling) our flesh, but this was not Adam’s situation before the fall. Adam had been sinless and
without an occupying force in his flesh. He had a clear choice in the matter.
From Paul’s perspective, we are all born now with this urge living under our
skin—and it all traces back to the decision of one man, a decision that
affected all who follow.
Just like Adam we all have choices
·
We can try to
image God to a lost world or we can continue in our sin
·
We can be like
the first Adam and Chose Death, or take the gift from the last Adam and chose
life!
VS 15-18
15But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and
God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many.
But even greater is God’s wonderful
grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ.
16And the result of God’s gracious gift is very
different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our
being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins.
- · Adam was the infection, Jesus is the cure
- · Adam brought despair, Jesus brought hope
- · Adam brought darkness, Jesus is the light
- · Adam created a sin nature, Jesus lived a sinless life
- · Adam brought death, sickness, cancer, and old age: Jesus gave us an opportunity for eternal life!
Sin not only introduced
death into the world; Adam’s sin also enabled death to literally rule the
world—nothing can break free from its grip. But think how much bigger an impact
grace can have. Instead of living in fear of death, those who believe reign in life through Jesus, the one who made
it all happen.
Adam’s one act led to
condemnation for the world, and Jesus’ one act made life-giving justification
available to the world.
VS 20-21
20God’s law was given so that all people could see how
sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace
became more abundant.
·
You
ever had the sun light come through a window and show you just how dusty your
house is
·
Its
everywhere, you thought it was clean, but the light reveled your house was not
as clean as you thought??
·
That’s
the law, God used it to show you just how desperate you are
·
We
have all been there thought we were doing good then BAM! You find out not so
much
·
The
more we understand the Law (the bible) the more Gods grace shines through
o Its kinda like getting off on a little
speeding ticket VS a big one!
·
21So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them
to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing
with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
- · You cant do it with out JESUS
- · Gods grace is waiting on you
- · Jesus has got a room all ready for ya
- · He is just waiting on you
- · The only way you can escape the fear and sting of death is Jesus!!
