Sermon Notes 9-21-2014

The Road to Romans!
We are all worth a wrath!

Romans 1:18–2:1 (ESV)
18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

19For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.
20For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
21For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
22Claiming to be wise, they became fools,
23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

24Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,
25because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
26For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature;
27and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
28And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.
29They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips,
30slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,
31foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.

32Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

1Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things.

Do you suppress the truth????

18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

·      Paul takes a very harsh turn very quick
·      It gets right to the point
·      God will and does pour out wrath on the unrighteous
·      Because when we don’t follow God we withhold the truth!

And then he explains there is no way you don’t know God exists

19For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.
20For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
21For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
22Claiming to be wise, they became fools,
23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

·      How do we know, because God reviled it to us
·      How did he show it?? Look around!!
·      You breathing God gave you air
·      Your heart work?? God gave you it
·      You have kids?? God did that
·      Ozone, night, day, rain hot cold, DNA
·      It all came from God!

Because of our lack of faith that God exist we make things up to believe in!
·      Evolution
·      Cults
·      We worship the earth
o   Others
o   Our kids
o   Our pets
Its called idolatry!
Exodus 20:2–5 (ESV)
2“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
3“You shall have no other gods before me.
4“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
5You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,

And this drives us to our next issue, Mans relentless pursuit of sin

24Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,
25because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

·      Sin is a heart issue!
·      It’s a dishonor to you and to God
·      When we worship anything other than God we are lying to ourselves and leading others astray
·      We are made to follow, so make sure you show people the right way
·      Be Jesus with Skin on!

Sin is always a heart issue! Are hearts drive our wants and desires, our needs and our passions, our will and what we pursue

The laundry list of sin!!
26For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature;

The list
·      Sexual immorality
·      Unrighteousness
·      Covetousness
·      Malice
·      Envy
·      Murder
·      Deceit
·      Gossip
·      Slander
·      God haters
·      Inventors of evil
·      Foolish
·      Faithless
·      Heartless
·      Ruthless
We always want to pick one that worst than the others don’t we???
·      To make us feel better about our sin!
·      To point the finger
·      This list covers us all!!!

Paul leaves no stone unturned! God hates sin and the unbeliever Sin rules their lives!

Paul was in Corinth when he wrote this
·      Idolatry was everywhere
·      There were week long orgies
·      Child scarifies
·      Brutality and immorality were everywhere
·      And Paul lets the romans know God will bring down his wrath on those who turn away from him! Now or later it will happen unless you turn and run to God!!!

32Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

·      And he says it again there is know excuse for not knowing there is a God! One ruler of the entire universe!
