Sunday Sermon Notes 10-21-2012

We are right back at the heart
Man have I seen lots of heart this past week!!
Proverbs on the Heart

Jesus has a lot to say about the heart! And He says it really matters

Matthew 5:8 (ESV) “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Matthew 6:21 (ESV) For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 15:8 (ESV) “People honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;

The Heart
·         Is mentioned 900 times (ESV)
·         In proverbs over 77 times
·         The heart is the center of who we are , we are spiritual and flesh and at the center is the heart
·         Even outside of religion the heart is at our core

The problem!

Proverbs 20:9 (ESV) Who can say, “I have made my heart pure; I am clean from my sin”?

What is sin “Sin is anything that dishonors, or disobeys God”

·         Our sin nature, we ae by nature sinners, Adam fell and we are all cursed with a sin nature
·         It goes back to Matthew 15:8
·         We see this a lot in the church setting
·         Jesus is the only way to change a heart from sin, through salvation we are set apart from sin
·         We have a flaw for the flesh

Proverbs 4:23 (ESV) Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.

·         Your life is like a river, Everything flows from your heart
·         A great word picture
·         All of our issues can only be dealt if we take it back to the heart
o   Like pollution you have to go up stream
·         Sin comes from the heart
·         Jesus talks about this
o   Matthew 5:28 (ESV) But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
o   Matthew 6:21 (ESV) For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
o   Luke 6:45 (ESV) The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
o   Read Mark 7:20-23

·         The heart is where sin starts, stop looking at the sin look at the heart

How do we deal with the sin problem??

The secular world will tell you to deal with the behavior, It’s called “Behavior modification” all that does is scratch the surface.

·         Don’t rearrange the flesh
o   We exchange one sin for another
o   It brings pride or despair
o   White knuckle obedience fails more times than not

How does God want you to deal with it??

·         God wants more than good people
o   Matthew 15:8 (ESV) “People honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me;
o   God wants worshipers
o   God wants loving people

It’s called the doctrine of “Regeneration”!

Regeneration in Christ changes the disposition from lawless, Godless self-seeking (Rom. 3:9-18; 8:7) which dominates man in Adam into one of trust and love, of repentance for past rebelliousness and unbelief, and loving compliance with God's law henceforth. It enlightens the blinded mind to discern spiritual realities (I Cor. 2:14-15; II Cor. 4:6; Col. 3:10), and liberates and energizes the enslaved will for free obedience to God
(J. I. Packer)

Ezekiel 36:26–27 (ESV) And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

·         It’s about a new heart
o   It’s about the gift of Grace
o   It’s about the Gift of Jesus
o   When we accept Jesus God gives a new essence, a new center , a new compass

·         You know hard hearted people
·         God puts his spirit in us to guide us

Are we perfect??
·         We are not going to be perfect this side of heaven
·         Like all new things we continue to grow and learn
o   The bible calls it a new creation

·         Back to the word picture!!
o   When we get a new heart we get a new life
o   A life filled with grace
o   A life filled hope
o   A life filled with direction
o   A life filled with community
o   A life filled with JESUS

·         You get new desires
o   Desires to stop doing certain things
o   Desires to walk away from some people
o   Desires to pray
o   Desires to read your bible
o   Desires to be with people of Jesus
o   Desires to be with your church family
o   Desires to serve
o   Desires to follow Gods word
o   A Desire to love, serve , and be close you our savior Jesus

·         Peter says it this way: 1 Peter 2:2–3 (ESV) Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
