Sermon Notes 10-29-2017

Who tempts you?
Matthew 4:3-11
Matthew 4:3–11 (NIV)
3The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
5Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.
6“If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”
7Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.
9“All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
10Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
11Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

How does Satan tempt you?
Satan is crafty, he is smart, he is cunning, and he knows your hearts and desires? He is listening and watching you for the right time to strike!
We can learn a lot about our adversary by studying how and when and why he tempted Jesus! You are being tempted, you may not know it but you are! So I’ll ask you again how is Satan tempting you?

VS 3 The tempter came to him and said
So, to start let’s look at why Satan tempts you!
John 10:10 (NIV)
10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
·      To create sin in your life
·      To separate you from the love and protection of God
·      To steal your joy
·      To kill your spirit
·      And to destroy your peace
·      He comes to disrupt the work of God, and wreak havoc on God’s children

And let’s look at the tempter himself!
Matthew Henry:  The Devil is the tempter, and therefore he is Satan—an adversary; for those are our worst enemies, that entice us to sin, and are Satan’s agents, are doing his work, and carrying on his designs.
·      Yes, Satan is the ultimate tempter
·      But let’s not miss what Jesus warned us about the most
·      The wolves (plural)
·      Notice I didn’t ask what is Satan tempting you with
·      I ask “how”
·      Or better yet who?
·      The tempters aren’t just the ones you see
·      The scary ones are the ones you don’t

Satan just didn’t go after Jesus desires, he used the scripture and twisted it to fit his narrative! And sometimes we think we are smarter and wiser than our adversary, what we learn here is that if we aren’t careful he will attack you with the very thing you think you know!

The subtle temptations

The first tempting, the sin of necessity (tell these stones to become bread)
·      The first thing Satan did was attack his necessity
·      You’re hungry, your God, make some bread
·      No harm in that
·      You deserve it, it’s been 40 days
·      When you hungry, a bill needs paid, diapers are running thin
·      That’s when we will be tempted
·      Survival is driving force
·      And here we see the devil himself using a basic need to turn Jesus
·      That’s why we walk together
·      That’s why we do life together
·      To help fill those gaps
·      And not give Satan a reason to say, “where is your god now”
·      Satan will use your necessity to doubt the love of God
·      Satan will use necessity to make you doubt that God cares at all

The second tempting, the sin of pride (If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down)
·      The movie the Patriot Mel Gibson said of his adversary “pride will do”
·      Pride in a believer is just what Satan ordered
·      The thought that you are untouchable because you belong to Jesus
·      The zeal we get and turn Jesus into something he is not
Proverbs 16:18 (NIV)
18Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.
James 4:6 (NIV)
6But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
·      Be careful to never let pride in your faith set you up for a attack from Satan

The not so subtle
8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.
9“All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
10Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”

The third temptation, the sin of your desire’s! (9“All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”)
·      My mom used to say be careful what you wish for
·      Satan knows what you desire
·      What you want so bad you will do anything to get it
·      So be careful that you keep your desires in check
·      Could be someone other than you spouse
·      Stuff
·      A Promotion
·      Whatever it is, Satan will try and position you in a place to sin, and give you what you want right now
·      But it will get in the way of what you ultimately want
·      True love, peace and joy

The ones in your blind spot
·      It’s not the obvious sin temptations that you need to worry about
·      It’s the subtle ones
·      The ones dressed up to look like good and righteous and wholesome
·      The ones you think you deserve that will take the deepest roots so be careful what you wish for!

The ones in your blind spot
·      It’s not the obvious sin temptations that you need to worry about
·      It’s the subtle ones
·      The ones dressed up to look like good and righteous and wholesome
·      The ones you think you deserve that will take the deepest roots so be careful what you wish for!

How do we combat temptation?
All three times Jesus answered with the word of God!
·      We simply follow the word
·      That’s why walking together is so important
·      That’s why we study and we grow together
·      To stay strong, to avoid the temptations of life
·      Jesus said the road is narrow, ill add this
o   Its full of curves
o   Its full of pot holes
o   It’s got cliffs
o   And falling rocks
·      We have to use god’s word to navigate it
·      It’s the road map
·      Paul says this about it!
Ephesians 6:10 (NIV)
10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
Ephesians 6:13–18 (NIV)
13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

And notice this!
11Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
·      Just like there is evil in the world there is good
·      Satan has an army
·      So, does Jesus
·      In the spirit world, there are angels fighting for you
·      And on this earth Gods children are also “angels” with skin on

Sermon Notes 10=22-2017

5 things Jesus wants you to know today!

John 13:34–35 (ESV)
34A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
35By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

So what does Jesus want you to know today!
It’s really nothing new; Jesus’s teaching was timeless! He is never changing, but as our world changes around us, I think there are some things he wants us to remember. Jesus was not democrat or republican, he was not liberal or conservative, He was God incarnate (Emanuel), and he is the God of the universe, the second part of the trinity. He is the one who was with God when the earth was created and He loves each and every one of us in this room! So lets take a look at what Jesus has to say!

1) I love you!
John 3:16 (ESV)
16“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
·      Amidst the protest signs, yelling crowds, and political referendums, the simple message of Jesus’ love for you is often drowned out.
·      Never doubt that Jesus loves you more than you could ever know.
·      Jesus doesn’t just love a future version of you;
·      He loves you exactly as you are right now.
·      Jesus’ love for you has no prerequisites or requirements.

Romans 5:8 (ESV)
8but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
·      Even if you hate Him, Jesus loves you and wants what is best for you.
·      Love is at the core of everything Jesus taught.

1 John 4:8–10 (ESV)
8Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
9In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.
10In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
·      Unfortunately His message of love has been conveniently left out by many who would rather make a point than make a difference

2. I understand rejection.
Isaiah 53:3 (ESV)
3He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
·      Jesus knows how it feels to be a social outcast.
·      You would think the religious leaders would have been His best friends, but they hated Him.
·      They sought to kill Him and publicly shame Him any chance they had. Eventually, the religious elite joined forces with local politicians and murdered Jesus in front of a cheering crowd. Rejection hurts. (Matthew 27:1-3)

Mark 3:20–21 (ESV)
20Then he went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat.
21And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.”
·      Jesus’ own family thought He was out of His mind; you probably understand how that feels. In Jesus’ greatest moment of need, His closest friends deserted Him.

·      You may feel rejected by society and the church right now, and that daily pressure takes a toll.
·      Jesus understands.
·      His heart always breaks for the rejected and the outcast.
o   The woman at the well (John 4)
o   The women that washed his feet (Luke 7:36-50)
·      Jesus wants to gather you in His arms and let you know that He loves you.
·      You have a home with Jesus, you belong to Him, and you are His child.
·      Don’t reject Him because He has not rejected you

3. I understand temptation, I was tempted too.
Hebrews 4:15–16 (ESV)
15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
16Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
·      Jesus was tempted in every way that we are tempted.

Hebrews 2:17–18 (ESV)
17Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
18For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
·      He does not shame you or reject you because of your temptations and feelings.
·      He faced the same thing when He walked the earth.
·      He never married, and faced daily pressure and temptation in every way imaginable.
·      Some like to pretend they are perfect and never face any struggles, but they’re lying.

Hebrews 12:2–3 (ESV)
2looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
3Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.
·      Jesus really was perfect and still faced temptation.
·      He battled the desire to run away from His Father’s plan. (The Garden)
·      He understands what you are going through.
·      If you read about His life, you will see it was no cake walk, but if you will walk with Him and obey Him, you will find a greater reward than you could ever imagine
o   Stay in his word
o   Pray often
o   Take his yoke, follow Him, His yoke is light and he will lead you down the tight road!

4. I want more for you.
·      Think of the bible and Jesus teaching as a big yard with a high fence!
o   Inside the fenced is safe and good and pleasing to him
o   Anything outside the box is harmful and bad (sin) and is not pleasing to him
·      Sin is not a fun word or a comfortable topic, but Jesus will not stop bringing it to our attention because we will miss out on life with Him if sin is left unaddressed.

Ephesians 3:17–21 (ESV)
17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
18may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
19and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
20Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,
21to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
·      You may think Jesus is trying to take the one thing you enjoy or spoil your fun, but that is not the case.
·      The reason He wants us to stay in”yard” is because He wants what is best for you.

1 Timothy 2:1–4 (ESV)
1First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,
2for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
3This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,
4who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
·      Ignore the political arguments, the protestors, and the yelling.
·      Jesus wants you to trust Him.
·      Trust that He has good things in store for you.
·      Trust that He wants what is best for you.
·      Before you decide that what you feel is right, decide if you trust Him
·      You want folks to be saved?
·      You want more folks going to heaven with you
·      You have to be JESUS WITH SKIN ON
·      Who cares what the TV says
·      Or the right wingers or left wingers
·      We have to be ambassadors of our Father and Big Brother!
·      Its not to condemn, its to show them the Way and we cant do that by showing hate and contempt
·      Remembers Paul’s words

1 Timothy 1:15 (NLT)
15This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them all.
·      The bible has to be a mirror not a window!

5. I will be here for you.
Romans 2:3–4 (NLT)
3Since you judge others for doing these things, why do you think you can avoid God’s judgment when you do the same things?
4Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?
·      You may disagree with Jesus’s thoughts on any Sin in your life, but He will not turn away from you.
·      You may enjoy the life you live right now even if it disagrees with the guidelines He laid out in Scripture. Jesus understands your hesitation to make changes.

2 Peter 3:9 (NLT)
9The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.
·      He does not give up on us.
·      For a long time now, people have disagreed with Him, yelled at Him, and run from Him, and He patiently waits.
·      Jesus is patient with us because He wants you to know Him.
·      Jesus wants you to live the life He has planned for you.

Matthew 11:28–30 (NLT)
28Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.
29Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
·      When you are worn out from doing things your way, He will be here.
·      Turn to Him and ask for help, and He will be there before you can blink.
·       There is no permanent joy outside of Jesus.
·       Jesus wants what is best for you, and He wants you to experience a full life.
·       Jesus is not concerned with winning an argument or forcing you to do something you don’t want to do.
·       Jesus wants you to know that your relationship with Him is better than anything else out there.
·       Until you reach that point, He will be here patiently drawing you to Himself

Close

1 Peter 5:5–7 (NLT)
5In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
6So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.
7Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.
·      You see God really does love you
·      He knows that know more than ever in your life time you will be rejected for your faith
·      He knows that we are all sinners, not one of us is better than the other
·      He knows we will be tempted to cast stones, to point the finger at each other
·      He knows you will be self righteous instead of humble and loving
·      He knows your hurting in your own sin, your scared, you think that its all out of control
·      He knows that you will run away and he wants you to know he is waiting for you
·      He has place for us here to be safe, to be secure, its in his word, Its in your time with Him growing stronger and more like Him, its spending time with others struggling just like you (His church, with His children)
·      He knows we are going to mess up often, and sin often, and fail often
·      That’s why he went to the cross, for you, don’t ever forget that
·      He made it personal, he made it possible, He shed his blood so you don’t have to
·      So lets stay in the yard, lets look in the mirror, and lets follow Jesus’s final command!
John 13:34–35 (NLT)
34So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.
35Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
·      We founded the church on this Verse
·      I try and live my life by this Verse

·      Will you too???
