Sermon Notes 10-1-2017

God equips the called, he does not call the equipped
Matthew 3:1-12

Matthew 3:1–12 (NLT)
1In those days John the Baptist came to the Judean wilderness and began preaching. His message was,
2“Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.”
3The prophet Isaiah was speaking about John when he said, “He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming! Clear the road for him!’ ”
4John’s clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. For food he ate locusts and wild honey.
5People from Jerusalem and from all of Judea and all over the Jordan Valley went out to see and hear John.
6And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River.
7But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to watch him baptize, he denounced them. “You brood of snakes!” he exclaimed. “Who warned you to flee the coming wrath?
8Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.
9Don’t just say to each other, ‘We’re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.’ That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones.
10Even now the ax of God’s judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire.
11“I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
12He is ready to separate the chaff from the wheat with his winnowing fork. Then he will clean up the threshing area, gathering the wheat into his barn but burning the chaff with never-ending fire.”

So, we are back! And again, I wont to look at this two ways! One where do we see God in all this and two how can we apply this to our everyday lives!

Where do we see God in this?
VS 1 In those days John the Baptist came to the Judean wilderness and began preaching. His message was,
2“Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.”
·      For 300 years God went silent
·      No prophets
·      No messengers
·      Nothing
·      But God told us through his last prophet one will come before Jesus
Malachi 3:1 (NLT)
1“Look! I am sending my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. Then the Lord you are seeking will suddenly come to his Temple. The messenger of the covenant, whom you look for so eagerly, is surely coming,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
·      Maliachi paints the picture of the first coming of Christ!

Malachi even points to what will happen when he arrives!
VS 7 But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to watch him baptize, he denounced them.
·      John called out the ones who were not prepared for Jesus
·      Who had been taking advantage of Gods Silence
·      And that is what God said would happen!
Malachi 3:2–3 (NLT)
2“But who will be able to endure it when he comes? Who will be able to stand and face him when he appears? For he will be like a blazing fire that refines metal, or like a strong soap that bleaches clothes.
3He will sit like a refiner of silver, burning away the dross. He will purify the Levites, refining them like gold and silver, so that they may once again offer acceptable sacrifices to the Lord.

God sent John to prepare the Way for JESUS!
VS 3 The prophet Isaiah was speaking about John when he said, “He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming! Clear the road for him!’ ”
Isaiah 40:3–5 (ESV)
3A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.
5And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
·      God sent John to because the way of life of Gods people was about to change
·      God sent someone to clear the path
·      To get folks attention
·      And that leads us to out next point God equips the called, he does not call the equipped!

Why is it important that we follow?
Because, God calls his people to do extraordinary things, and he calls ordinary people!

1. God does not call perfect people
4John’s clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. For food he ate locusts and wild honey.
·      Dressed funny
·      Ate funny
·      Was not the best with his social skills?
·      He was load
·      He was brutally honest
o   “REPENT”
o   “BROOD OF VIPERS”
·      He wasn’t educated
·      He wasn’t Polished
·      He could have been from the dirty south!
·      But God used him in a powerful way
·      Why??

2. Why?? Why does God call, then equip?
to show trust in our faith, is bigger than our ability
·      John’s life was characterized by blind devotion and absolute surrender to Jesus Christ and His kingdom.
o   He followed!
o   He simply followed
o   No questions ask
o   He built that relationship
o   Had complete trust in his savior
o   That’s why!
To show that Belief in Gods promises yield big results
·      John’s voice was a “lone voice in the wilderness” (John 1:23) as he proclaimed the coming of the Messiah to a people who desperately needed a Savior.
o   He believed that God would do what God said he would do
o   And he boldly followed
o   And proclaimed the coming of a savior
o   His faith did not make him popular
o   But he was standing alone, but knew he was never alone as long as he followed!

He was
·      The predecessor for the modern-day evangelist as he unashamedly shared the good news of Jesus Christ.
·      He was a man filled with faith and a role model to all of us who wish to share our faith with others.

What can we learn from John the Baptist

First, whole-heartedly believing in Jesus Christ is possible.
·      John the Baptist could have believed in and worshipped any number of gods available to him before Jesus arrived on the scene.
·      He believed this with his whole heart and spent his days “preparing the way” for the Lord’s coming (Matthew 11:10).
·      But the road was not an easy one to prepare. Daily he faced doubters of various influence and popularity who did not share his enthusiasm for the coming Messiah.
·      Under hard questioning from the Pharisees, John shared his belief: “‘I baptize with water,’ John replied, ‘but among you stands one you do not know. He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie’" (John 1:26-27).
·      John believed in Christ and his great faith prepared him for hardships, but it kept him steadfast on his course until the time when he could say as he saw Jesus approach, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).
·      As believers, we can all have this steadfast faith.

Second, anyone can be a strong and serious witness for Jesus Christ.
·      John’s life is an example to us of the seriousness with which we are to approach the Christian life and our call to ministry, whatever that may be.
·      We pattern our lives after John’s by first examining ourselves to be sure we are truly in the faith (2 Corinthians 13:5).
·      like John, we are to know and believe that “to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21), so we can be fearless in the face of persecution and death.
·      John lived his life to introduce others to Jesus Christ, and knew the importance of repenting of one’s sins in order to live a holy and righteous life.
·      And as a follower of Jesus Christ, he also was unafraid of calling out people such as Herod and the Pharisees for their sinful behavior.

Third, John shows us how to stand firm in our faith no matter what the circumstances.
·      Paul reminded Timothy that “everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12).
·      But for many of us who live in freedom, persecution takes on a very mild form.
·      As he lived in an occupied country, John had to be aware that anything contrary to utter devotion to the king or emperor was asking for trouble. Yet his message was unchanging, bold and strong.
·      It was John’s belief, his message, and his continual rebuke of King Herod that landed him in prison. While it is hard to know for sure what John was feeling as he sat in prison, we can be sure that he might have had some doubts about the Lord who tested his faith. In fact, John gets a message out to Jesus asking, "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?" (Matthew 11:3).
·      As Christians we all will have our faith put to the test, and we will either falter in our faith or, like John, cling to Christ and stand firm in our faith to the end.

Sermon Notes 9-24-2017

When Gods people follow good things happen
Matthew 2:1-23

Matthew 2:1–23 (ESV)
1Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem,
2saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
3When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;
4and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
5They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
6“ ‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’ ”
7Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared.
8And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.”
9After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was.
10When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.
11And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
12And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.
13Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.”
14And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt
15and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
16Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men.
17Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:
18“A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”
19But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
20saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.”
21And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.
22But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee.
23And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.

I have said it before and I will say it again and again! It all starts with a relationship!
·      You have to first establish the relationship with your heavenly father
·      And he will lead you
·      It may not always be easy
·      Sometimes it be difficult
·      But he will always lead us down the right path
·      Most of the things that happen in this life are consequences of us not following
·      The more we follow the more Love, Joy and Peace we will have on this earth

That being said! Let see where we see God in all this!
We see 3 times that Gods promised was fulfilled to his people from the prophets!
VS 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

VS 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:
18“A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”

VS 23 And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.
·      Even through tragedy God’s will prevails
·      God knew Herod was going to kill all the males under 2
·      That would have been 20 or so kids (population around 1000)
·      God cannot stop evil in this world, but he can lead his children from it
·      And God does not look at life like we do
o   This life is temporary
o   Heaven is permanent
o   If he has to lead us from here to there he will
o   And sometimes bad things happen to good people
o   But God always wins
o   If I die tomorrow God wins, and I get to see my Savior face to face
·      And from this we can take comfort in God keeps his promise and his plan is always carried out!!!!

When God leads and his people follow Good things happen!
Practically we can learn from this story too!

And 4 times we see God leading and his children following!
19But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
20saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child’s life are dead.”
22But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee.

God can lead you in a number of way
·      A dream
·      A hey stupid friend (angel)
·      But mostly through his word
·      And through prayer!

God will always get us the message, But the most important thing is we follow!

Sometimes following means doing what is right no matter the personal cost
·      The wise men didn’t follow the king!
o   Sometimes we have to go against the grain
o   Sometimes we have to say no
·      Joseph had to move
o   Sometimes we are inconvenienced
o   Sometimes we have to move
o   Switch jobs
o   Change our schedules
o   Most of the times we just have to say no to ourselves
·      Sometimes it’s scary
o   Joseph was afraid
o   Something’s that god ask of you will be scary
o   Moving
o   Switching jobs
o   Going against the norm
o   And some are as simple as
§  Saying no
§  Being honest
§  Standing up for what’s right, not what’s popular

Close
The biggest take away!

God will get you the message
·      Through conflict
·      Through hurt feelings
·      Through his word
·      Through prayer
·      Through good times and bad

The important thing is that you listen
·      Look in the mirror
·      Pray hard about it
·      Talk to the people that will tell you the truth, not what you want to hear

Warning signs you stopped listening
·      You stopped praying
·      You stopped reading the word
·      You stopped talking to the people that will tell you the truth
·      You withdraw away from things and circumstances to avoid conflict

·      You have unresolved conflict

Sermon Notes 9-17-2017

The birth of Jesus! In September ?????
Matthew 1:18-25

Matthew 1:18–25 (ESV)
18Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.
19And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.
20But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
21She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).
24When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife,
25but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

I know what you’re thinking! I hear about this every Christmas! “and to us a child is born”! but have you ever really looked at the story of the birth of Jesus and ask yourself what else is there in this? How can I take this and get a better understanding of who God, the father, is? Or how can I get some practical use out of this? Well today is your lucky day! Because we are going to do just that!

First God the Father!

Here we see God does exists!
22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

Prophesy fulfilled
Isaiah 7:14 (ESV)
14Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Isaiah 9:6 (ESV)
6For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Jesus comes in to this world Just like God told us he would!
Isaiah 53:2 (ESV)
2For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.

Proof God is real!
·      He brought Jesus in to this world just like he said he would
·      He would not be special
·      He would not standout
·      We could all relate to him
·      And this is just how Jesus came into this world

And he came to fulfill Gods purpose for him
21She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
·      God sent Jesus to fulfill all of the scripture in the old Testament that a savior was coming
·      One would give us all a pathway to heaven
·      To mend a broken relationship with the world and its heavenly father

The old testament is all about Jesus Coming as savior!
·      Christ is the Seed of woman and in Genesis 3:15 we are told He will one day crush Satan.
·      In Exodus we find the story of the Passover Lamb, and Christ is the sacrificial Lamb given for us.
·      In Leviticus we read of the high priests making sacrifices for the people, and Christ has become our High Priest, making the perfect sacrifice to atone for our sins.
·      In Deuteronomy Moses prophesied of a prophet who would come that would be greater than Himself. Jesus is that Great Prophet.
·      In the book of Joshua, Joshua met the Captain of the Lord's host. That man is Jesus Christ.
·      The judges were leaders who delivered God's people, each of them typifying the Lord Jesus.
·      Boaz, the kinsman who redeemed Ruth's inheritance, is a picture of Christ.
·      David, the anointed one, pictures Jesus and Jesus is described as being the Son of David.
·      In 2 Samuel when the king is being enthroned, the entire scene is descriptive of the Lord Jesus.
·      The books of Kings speak of the glory of God filling the temple and the Chronicles describe the glorious coming king, both referring to Jesus, the King of Kings.
·      Ezra depicts Jesus as the Lord of our fathers.
·      Job says clearly that the Redeemer is coming!
·      Esther offers a picture of Christ interceding for His people.
·      Christ appears time after time in the Psalms, including when David describes Him as “the Shepherd.”
·      Isaiah details His glorious birth.
·      Jeremiah reveals that He will be acquainted with sorrows.
·      Joel describes Him as the Hope of His people.
·      Amos tells us that Jesus is the judge of all nations.
·      Obadiah warns of the coming eternal kingdom.
·      Jonah offers a picture of Jesus being dead for three days, then coming back to life to preach repentance.
·      Zephaniah says that He will be the king over Israel.
·      Zachariah is the prophet who speaks of Jesus riding on a colt.
·      Malachi is the one who calls Him the Son of Righteousness.

Can you see it? The entire Old Testament points toward Jesus as Savior, and if you miss that, you've missed the entire point of the Scriptures. Jesus is the Messiah and the fulfillment of prophecy.

Now some practical application!

A woman about to be married
18Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.

Betrothed!
·      Arranged to be married
·      Engaged
·      Spoken for

Came together
·      Slept together
·      Had sex
·      She is still a virgin

With Child
·      Not a good thing in those days
·      As a matter of fact
·      It was a death sentences
Deuteronomy 22:23–24 (ESV)
23“If there is a betrothed virgin, and a man meets her in the city and lies with her,
24then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbor’s wife. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.

·      Get the picture
·      Hard to prove divine inception!

She was scared as to what would happen, but she trusted God!

Joseph was hurt!
19And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.
·      He had options
·      He could have exposed her
·      He could have taken out his anger on her
·      And he would have been right in the eyes of the law
·      But he wasn’t going to
·      He was going to do it quite and not bring shame or death to her

For us:
·      We have all been there and will be there again
·      We have the right to bring shame, wrath, revenge on others
·      But should we
·      Is that the just thing to do?
·      Is it what Jesus would do?
·      We can all learn from Joseph
·      The man we hear so little about
·      Jesus earthly Dad
·      His decision made a huge impact on the world
·      Just like you
o   Your decision
o   How you handle conflict
o   How you handle being hurt
o   How you handle people who do you wrong
o   Can make a huge impact in their life as well!

Good things happen to those who follow Gods plan!
20But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
24When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife,
25but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
God spoke to Joseph in a dream, through an angel and God speaks to you

God speaks to you
·      Through others
·      Through prayer
·      Through his word
·      We just have to follow

You can follow too
·      Just like Joseph
·      Listen for God in everything
·      Gods comes to us in conflict
·      In hurt
·      In bad circumstances
·      We just have to follow

Joseph is a great example for us all
·      He was an ordinary guy with and ordinary job
·      He listened during a very hurtful and painful time
·      He followed even if it meant he had to sacrifice

Sound familiar?
·      Anyone in this room could be Joseph
·      And we all can do extraordinary things others life
·       If we just
·      listen
·      and follow Gods plan for our lives!
