The Road to Romans!
Not
everyone is a “True Child of God”

Romans 9:6–13 (NLT)
6Well then, has God failed to fulfill his promise to
Israel? No, for not all who are born into the nation of Israel are truly
members of God’s people!
7Being descendants of Abraham doesn’t make them truly
Abraham’s children. For the Scriptures say, “Isaac is the son through whom your
descendants will be counted,” though Abraham had other children, too.
8This means that Abraham’s physical descendants are not
necessarily children of God. Only the children of the promise are considered to
be Abraham’s children.
9For God had promised, “I will return about this time
next year, and Sarah will have a son.”
10This son was our ancestor Isaac. When he married
Rebekah, she gave birth to twins.
11But before they were born, before they had done
anything good or bad, she received a message from God. (This message shows that
God chooses people according to his own purposes;
12he calls people, but not according to their good or
bad works.) She was told, “Your older son will serve your younger son.”
13In the words of the Scriptures, “I loved Jacob, but I
rejected Esau.”
Who your parents are,
what church you go to, what bible you carry, who your pastor is, what you wear
to church, what you drive to church, who you eat with after church and many
more. These are all social statuses, rules, its the way we gage salvation in
the church today.
We aren’t much different
than the Jewish community in Paul’s day. I am sure if he were here today he
would be saying something similar to us today. You see the only got it half
right.
Kind of like the person
that only takes out of the conversation what they want to hear but ignores the
rest.
Pastors do it all the
time, that’s why I preach books of the bible so I wont try and piece it together
to say what I want it to say!
And Paul points out one
of those issues that the Jewish community did, with the word that and laws that
God gave them.
So let’s break it down
and lets see what we can learn from it!
Did God fail us in his promise?
VS6 Well then, has God failed to fulfill his
promise to Israel? No, for not all who are born into the nation of Israel are
truly members of God’s people!
·
If God fail us
in any way, then we are all here for no reason
·
God said I am
God! I will not fail you
Isaiah 55:11
(NLT)
11It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it
always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper
everywhere I send it.
·
Everything God
says is true and good
·
He always
follows through with his promises
·
And we can take
it to the bank
·
The problem is,
do we truly understand what he says?
·
The promises he
makes?
·
Or do we hear
what we want to hear?
·
Do we take mans
word for what God said?
And here is where Paul lays
the foundation for his argument, that Israel never really understood what God
was saying to them. “No, for not all who are born into the nation of Israel
are truly members of God’s people! “
·
This is where
you question your self
·
This is where
you take that deep look inside
·
I have all week
·
As I wrestled
with this text
·
Do I take to
much for granted, do I rely on me more than I try to understand God better?
Jesus said it best!
John 8:38 (NLT)
38I am telling you what I saw when I was with
my Father. But you are following the advice of your father.”
It don’t matter who your grandpa is!
VS7 Being descendants of Abraham doesn’t make
them truly Abraham’s children. For the Scriptures say, “Isaac is the son
through whom your descendants will be counted,” though Abraham had other
children, too.
VS8 This means that Abraham’s physical
descendants are not necessarily children of God. Only the children of the promise
are considered to be Abraham’s children.
VS9 For God had promised, “I will return about
this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”
Verse 7 (Isaac Vs
Ishmael)
·
Paul uses the
story of Abrahams two sons
·
One was the
promised child, one was not
·
And only the
line of Isaac was the promise kept
·
God makes choices
on who he blesses and who he does not
·
You see it had
nothing to do with Abraham, and everything to do with God!
Verse 8-9 (its Gods Promise that matters)
·
Its has nothing
to do with the flesh!
·
Who your born
to, its all about what God promises
·
And he promised
a Son, that the messiah would come from
·
And that
promise was made true in JESUS!
Philippians
3:3 (ESV)
3For we are the circumcision, who worship by the
Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh—
Galatians
4:28 (ESV)
28Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of
promise.
·
God showed the
power he has to do what he wants
·
He gave a woman
who could have no children, a child
·
This was a
precursor to Jesus
·
This was all
about God plan not ours
·
Its time we
take us out of the equation, and start to fully understand that its all about
his glory, his plan, his promise
·
Not what we
want it to be!
The choice is truly Gods, Not anything we do!
VS10 This son was our ancestor Isaac. When he
married Rebekah, she gave birth to twins.
VS11 But before they were born, before they had
done anything good or bad, she received a message from God. (This message shows
that God chooses people according to his own purposes;
VS12 he calls people, but not according to
their good or bad works.) She was told, “Your older son will serve your younger
son.”
·
Paul digs
deeper in to Gods word, and shows it has nothing to do with who you are
·
Its not about being
the first born
·
Its not about
how good you are
·
Or how bad you
are
·
Its about Gods
purpose
·
In Exodus God
told the Pharaoh that he chose him
o He was a bad man
o He was a tyrant
o He mistreated Gods people
o But God used him to his purpose
Its Gods choice, not mans
VS13 In the words of the Scriptures, “I loved
Jacob, but I rejected Esau.”
Some call it election, predestination, I say its Gods choice!
·
Who gets in and
who doesn’t
·
Who hears and
heads the warning
o
Repent
o
Have faith
o
Trust me
o
Carry out my
will
