The Sermon on the Mount!
Sermon 5, the law is fulfilled

Matthew 5:17-20

Christ Came to Fulfill the Law
Matthew 5:17 (ESV)
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

·         This is Jesus’s mission statement!
o   Many wanted radical change
o   The religious powers were creating new laws every day
o   Jesus came to fulfill the law
o   Fulfill the prophesies of the old testament (Gods Scrolls)

Preach the text, tell the story

It's not about the rules it's about Grace, It's about Love, It's about an inward change

It was no different then
·         The people were given rules they couldn’t follow
·         They were beat down
·         They were scared and mistreated because of all the rules
·         They were second class citizens, bowing down to the religious elite
·         They were ready for some grace, they were ready for some mercy
·         They need a savior, they needed Jesus

God was fulfilling His promise! And a new era of salvation

Jeremiah 31:31–34 (NLT)
31 “The day is coming,” says the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah. 32 This covenant will not be like the one I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and brought them out of the land of Egypt. They broke that covenant, though I loved them as a husband loves his wife,” says the LORD.
33 “But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day,” says the LORD. “I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 And they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their relatives, saying, ‘You should know the LORD.’ For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already,” says the LORD. “And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.”

In gods perfect timing, he sent his son to fulfill his promise to a world full of sin, a world that had turned their back on Him. The world needs a savior, and God sent his Son.

It's all about Him!

John 1:1–3 (NLT)
1 In the beginning the Word already existed.
      The Word was with God,
      and the Word was God.
2 He existed in the beginning with God.
3 God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.

The whole bible is about him, the law, the prophesies, are to prepare us for his arrival.

Jesus didn’t come to change the law he is the law, he came to fulfill it all. And usher in a new covenant of salvation, Grace, mercy and Hope!

Matthew 5:18–19 (NLT)
18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. 19 So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Vs 18
·         God’s law, not man’s law imposed or forced on his people!
o   Not talking about social law that’s different
o   I’m talking about religious laws brought alongside Gods law
o   We are all supposed to be changing through the spirit
o   When God shows us grace that grace needs to be passed on!
o   We need to live a life that allows people to get to know Jesus through you!
o   This law will never change
o   Timeless
Vs 19
·         There is a lot of soft gospel out there
·         We need to preach Jesus and get out of the way
·         During Jesus’s day there were a lot of rules and laws that were put in place to serve the religious leaders
·         They for Got that the more you walk with God the more of yourself you lose
·         They forgot the more you take on in ministry the you serve others and the less you get served

You want to be called great in Heaven, keep gods commands, teach others about Jesus. Love people and show mercy and Give grace!

Matthew 25:40 (NLT)
40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters,* you were doing it to me!’

Because I treat smiley right and love her and show her compassion and forgiveness she has softened over the years. She still cares baggage, but her heart is softer. You see when I got she was so wounded she would bite the hand that feded her, now, slowly she trust people more, she still is guarded, but with continued grace she will look to her savior more and forgive more and trust more everyday

The point:

Love people and honor God, treat people right and you will be called great in the kingdom of Heaven!
Matthew 5:20 (NLT)
“But I warn you—unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!

A little explanation:
·         The Pharisees were thought to be the closest people to God
·         The people were scared of them
o   They had power
o   They were the law
·         This speaks to Jesus’s character

Jesus knows it was just for show!

Matthew 23:15 (NLT)
15 “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you cross land and sea to make one convert, and then you turn that person into twice the child of hell* you yourselves are!

·         It was all about saving face
·         To be important, they need to be the center of attention
·         It was not about a relationship it was about status

It's not what’s on the outside!

Matthew 23:5–7 (NLT)
5 “Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels.* 6 And they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the seats of honor in the synagogues. 7 They love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi.’*

·         Jesus looks at the heart
·         In about an inward change, that is fighting to get out
·         God doesn’t care what you have, as long as you know his Son Jesus!
·         Your saved by faith, and covered in the blood of the Lamb of God

It's not about the rules; there is nothing you can do

Isaiah 64:6 (NLT)
We are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags.

·         There is nothing you can do to impress God
·         There is nothing you can say
·         Your saved by the work of Jesus on the cross
·         It's known as the great exchange
o   Jesus died a death I should have died
o   For sins he never committed
·         This is not about what you know (the Pharisees way)
·         The work you do the (the Pharisees way)
·         It's about who you know (Jesus)

The Sermon on the Mount!
Sermon 4, Are you salty!

Galatians 2:20 (NLT)
20 My old self has been crucified with Christ.* It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Are we living our life for Christ? Are we showing Jesus where ever we go? The more I study and read and walk with Jesus as my teacher I learn it’s not about how many verses we know or how many days we spend at church its if we are trying to live more like Jesus!

The Sermon on the Mount is where Jesus lays out the way he EXPECTS His followers to live there life and represent him. And for us, now more than ever, we must represent Jesus to our people, not around the world but in our own back yard!

Matthew 5:13 (ESV)
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.

We ain’t talking about your Grandma!
For some reason we look at some little old lady and say, “how sweet, she is just the salt of the earth” that’s hog wash! To be the Salt of the earth means a lot more!

So what is Jesus talking about?

Salt is an Antiseptic
Salt was and is used to clean our wounds
It stop the flesh from decaying
We are the only hope for lost people to keep them from going to hell, like salt is to a wound we are to a decaying rotting world.

Salt makes you thirsty
The world is not interested in the gospel
It’s our job to make them thirsty
      How do you do that
o   The way you live
o   The way you care for other
o   The way you walk in Jesus’s foot steps

Salt is a preservative
Followers of Christ are the only thing keeping the world from total destruction
Gods People—even as minority—serve as a preservative in the world, for a little bit of salt goes a long way.

Salt seasons!
Colossians 4:6 (ESV) Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
      Salt makes things taste better
      Salt makes you want more
Is the world (your world, your little piece of earth) a better place because you’re in it
In a time with so much hate, so much corruption, so much hurt are you make it a liitle better for the people God has placed in your world. Things can seem overwhelming, I tell all the team leaders if you just take your piece of the pie, and do it the best you can and don’t worry about all the rest this church will be a better place for the lost to come and hear about Jesus. Are you making your slice of the pie a better place?
Salt can be painful
In a world where we fight against
o   Porn
o   Sexual promiscuity
o   Crooked political systems
o   And a world in rapid decay, the gospel can be painful

One of two things happens when you hear the gospel you accept it or reject it. The Gospel by nature is painful, people don’t like to hear there are something’s in their lives that’s wrong and needs corrected and sometimes being the message bearer your hated to.

The only way salt loses its flavor is it get contaminated!
Are you contaminated with things in the world
Are you worshiping things other than Jesus
Have you lost some of your flavor because your contaminated?

So how’s it going? Does your life make a difference?
o   Does it count?
o   Who are you serving?
o   What are you giving?
o   Where are you pouring yourself out?
o   What kind of legacy will you leave?
o   Are you winning souls for Christ?

RT Kendell: Our being the “salt of the earth” is a valid description of the anointed child of God—not merely because we go to church, but because we have been exemplifying the spirit of the Beatitudes in the world.
“Make me a great soul-winner.” It was my wish then, and it is my wish now that I am 74. All my life I have tried to be salt. I cannot say I have seen all that many come to Christ. But I take comfort that a little bit of salt goes a long way.

Are you winning souls! Are you serving other are you cleaning the wounds and making the world a better place. Are you Salt? Or have you been contaminated by all the world has to offer?

Matthew 5:14–15 (NLT)
14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.

The church today is not doing a good Job showing Gods light
Divorce rate among Christians are the same as non-Christians
o   I’m not saying you can’t divorce
o   But we don’t even but God or know what God wants from us in our marriage
Our kids are walking away from church at alarming rate
o   Parents are not involved in teaching or molding Jesus
o   We can’t even get folks to help teach a few Sundays a year to help make sure our kids know and love Jesus
Pastors are afraid to preach the gospel
o   Because of money
o   And funding
o   And numbers

The world is a dark place
The sun is to darkness what Gods people are to a dark world
The light expose the sin of the world
The light shines a way out
Does the way you live shine Gods light and show the lost a better way?

Our light should be:
      Reflective
o   Jesus’s light should bounce off you like a bullet off of Superman’s chest
o   we should live our lives so Gods light is reflected to all we come in contact with
      Seen and Recognizable
o   You light should be seen by all who knows you
o   People should know you’re a child of God
o   Even if people reject it we have to make our light visible to all
o   Sometimes like cock roaches when you shine the light people may run
o   Is there any person you know that if they found out you were a Christian would be surprised?

Don’t hide your light!

Jesus says “no one knows the day or the hour of my return” so don’t get caught with your light hidden or he might just pass you by.

Matthew 5:16 (NLT)
In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

We are not saved by works
Our good deeds flow when we truly know and love Jesus
When we have been broken and regenerated
When God is truly the center of our lives

Jesus has plans for you; will you let his light shine in you and work through you?

Ephesians 2:8–10 (NLT)
8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. 10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

      It’s not about you
It’s about seeing Christ through you
It’s about doing what he has planned for you not what you want
It's about people seeing the new you in Christ

It's not about making people uncomfortable
Jesus did not go around beating people up
      He showed grace
      He showed mercy
He showed people there was a different way
He loved people and hurt for them
      He died for us all
