Sunday Sermon Notes 9-30-2012

Jesus Love (and meets) people through His Bride
(And His bride is a Hot Mess!!)

John 13:34–35 (ESV) A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

·         We as Christians are not much different than our non-Christians brothers
o   We have problems
o   We have stress
o   We have trails
o   We have family problems
o   We fight with each other??

·         We should handle things differently
o   They should see us Rely on Jesus
§  Matthew 11:28 (ESV) Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
o   They should see our faith during difficult times (Jesus calms the storms) Luke 8:22
§  You want to see what a man believes, watch him through tough times
§  Jesus is our great calm in life’s storms

Back it Philippians, and we are in Philippians 2Paul gives us some good advice to how and be a daily witness for Jesus!!

We are talking about being a good bride, and doing it Joyfully

Sunday Service Note 9-23-2012

Jesus is the ultimate Giver!!
Being Generous

Are you rich or poor??
·         Poor People
o   Identify with Jesus being poor
o   Democrats
o   Shakes their fist at the rich
·         Rich People
o   Prosperity Theology
o   Republican
o   Feels violated to help the poor
o
·         What about generous people??
o   Its biblical
o   We are commanded to be generous
o   Are you generous or stingy??

(Transition to MOM and DAD)
My life as a kid!!
·         My house is where all the Kids came
·         Mom always gave families in need
·         Helped neighbors

Are you generous, are you giving? We need to be more biblical and less worldly. We need to stop thinking about rich and poor. We don’t get closer to God by having less or more money. We get closer to God through a relationship with Jesus. Through our salvation we are given a huge gift of eternal life. God does not care if you’re rich or poor, he does care if you’re a generous giver.

Jesus Is the Most Generous Giver!!

2 Corinthians 8:9 (ESV) For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

·         So, he went from luxury to poverty. He went from glory to humility. He went from being served to serving. He went from seated on a throne to laid in a manger.
·         He humbled himself to come down and to join us.
·         The maker of heaven and earth enters into human “So that you by his poverty might become rich.
·          Jesus came to identify with us and trade places for us.
·
Jesus financially
·         Jesus worked a Job
·         Jesus paid taxes
·         Jesus tithed (Matthew 5:17–18, “Don’t think I’ve come to abolish the law. I’ve come to fulfill it)

 Jesus spiritually
·         We’re all sinners by nature and choice, and as a result, we’ve accrued a debt to God
·         Jesus comes and he pays our debt to God the Father.
·         He lives a life without any sin. The sin that we commit is not experienced by Jesus, and Jesus goes to the cross and there he substitutes himself.

Jesus suffers and dies on the cross in our place for our sins, paying our debt to God, declaring it himself, “It is finished. The debt is paid in full.” And Jesus traded places with us.

Jesus is a giver, not a taker. Jesus is generous, not stingy. One way of seeing all of salvation is that Jesus gives and we receive.

How does someone become a Christian? What do they do?” No, it’s not what they do; it’s what he’s done. It’s not what they give to Jesus; it’s what they receive from Jesus.

Generosity Is Measured by Sacrifice

The more we understand that Jesus is the most generous giver, we realize we don’t give so that he would love us, we give because he does. We don’t give to get, we give because we’ve already received. We have an attitude of gratitude.

2 Corinthians 8:12–14 (ESV)
For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have. For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness.

(Unpack the Verse)

·         New Testament, new covenant, grace-centered giving doesn’t set an amount
·         The New Testament teaches sacrifice, and that’s what the Bible’s talking about here.
·         So what does sacrifice look like for each person?
o    For  a single  mom, it may look like 1 percent and that might be an enormous generosity.
o   For the person who’s very affluent, it may be giving 90 percent and living off of 10 percent.

What’s sacrifice look like for you?
·         More than one in four American Protestants give $0 a year.
·         The median annual giving for a Christian is $200 a year, just over ½ percent of after-tax income.
·         Five percent of Christians give about 60 percent of all contributions. So, hope those guys don’t get sick. We’ve got a real problem.
·
If you look at this, what you will see is that many Christians worship their wealth; they don’t worship with their wealth.

Jesus Cares about Stewardship
·         Yours
o   Taking care of what God blesses you with
o   Giving to further the kingdom
o   Not just money ( your time, talent, and Gifts)
·         The Church
o   To use the resources given to further the kingdom
§  Teac our kids
§  Reach the lost
§  Fellowship with other believers
§  Equip the brothers and sisters

Jesus did a lot with very little he expects us to do the same. He wants us to become responsible with what he gives us, he wants us to be generous with our resources which means we have to manage them! And sometimes we need to sacrifice for the Great Good of Gods work.

God Loves a Cheerful Giver

2 Corinthians 9:6–7 (ESV)
The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

(Unpack the Verse)

·         The old adage “we reap what we sow”
·         God wants us to have fun while we are here
·         To enjoy what he has given us and

Our Vision To reach the Lost of this culture

About a year ago 60 people sat in this room and decide to step out on faith and build a building to reach the western culture. We were broke (still are), not able to pay our bills some months (still can’t), but we knew God had a bigger plan and he still does. Today we unveil that vision to you, the vision is Bigger and the goals are lofty, but we serve a big God and if we all follow what God has put on our hearts, by God’s grace and favor we will build it and we will reach the lost in Haysville, Sedgwick county, Kansas and the world for Jesus

Sunday Service Notes 9-16-2012

Communion, it’s all about Jesus!!
It’s all about the meal!!!

The Best Meal You’ve Ever Had

·         there are three variables:
o   The space, the physical location.
o   What was the occasion
o   Who did you eat it with? Family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, maybe it was the first date and that friendship started.
·         I want you to emotionally connect with this. Two things happen when we have a meal. Number one, we’re enjoying our friends, and number two, we’re welcoming people to become our friends
·         This is why the Bible talks about fellowship. That’s where God’s people eat meals and do life together as friends.

Christians should eat with non-Christians and should eat with Christians who are repentant, but eating with Christians who are unrepentant who want the benefits of Christianity while living in open rebellion, that’s intolerable to the Lord.

Meals in the Bible

·         One way to examine the Scriptures is to look at the meals, a series of meals eaten with and without God, and that culminates in the Christian meal of Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper, the Lord’s Table, the Eucharist. It goes by different names according to your tradition and heritage, but it’s about a meal being eaten with God and his people.

We are going to look at 5 meals form Genesis to Revelations and examine what it meant to take meals with God and without and look at how important it is to keep God centered in all we do !!

Meal #1 – Forbidden Fruit (Genesis 3)

·         The first meal is forbidden fruit, and it is the first meal eaten without God in Genesis 3
·         Do you know the story???
o   Some people’s view of God is that God essentially creates life as a law garden with a grace tree, meaning, the answer’s no to everything, and there’s only a thing or two that you really get to do. The way God created the world; it was a grace garden with a law tree in the middle. Tons of freedom and joy with one thing that was forbidden.
o   they received a sin nature
o   It’s a portrait of life without God
§  It’s not just about eating a meal; it’s about picking a friend. What Adam and Eve were doing is saying, “We choose not to be friends with God. We choose to be friends with Satan
o   Eating is a form of worshiping, and when we eat a meal, we’re not just choosing a food, we’re picking a relationship.

What happens in Genesis 3 is that a meal is eaten without God, and a friendship is forged in rebellion against God, and then the promise is made that Jesus will come and he will make all things new and better. What happens then is they are kicked out of the Garden of Eden and they’re cast away from the tree of life, because had they partaken of the tree of life, they would have lived forever in sin, separated from God. So, it was an act of grace that God kicked them out.

Meal #2 – Passover (Exodus 12)

·         440 years of suffering under Egypt’s rule
·         It culminated with a most cruel pharaoh. He was abusive and harsh to God’s people, he mistreated them, and he abused them. He did not want them to worship their God; he wanted them to worship him as God.
·         God raised up Moses to confront this king named Pharaoh, and Moses came on behalf of the Lord.
·         (Tell the story of how God kept warning Pharaoh and he wouldn’t listen.)
·         Explain Passover (sacrificial lamb) ( the last Wrath against the paraoh)

AND: it’s all a prequel to Jesus
·         Passover is preparatory, anticipatory. It’s a sign pointing to a greater reality, Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world
·         1 Corinthians 5:7 (ESV) For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
·         Revelation 5:12 (ESV) “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”

Meal #3 – The Last Supper (Matthew 26:26-28)

·         Its Passover season, so Jesus is going to celebrate Passover, as the fulfillment of the expectation.
·         Read and break down the Verse!!
·         Jesus is changing over one thousand years of history.
·         Passover is and always has been about Jesus, it’s always been about Him
·         Every time you have a piece of bread, remember Jesus’ body, broken for me
·
Here’s the bottom line. We’re sinners. You’re a sinner, I’m a sinner. We’re all hard-hearted, want to be our own God, disagree, let me do what I want, don’t impose on my life, this is my perspective, my values, my kingdom, I’m in charge. Jesus comes, says, “No, you’re a sinner. You got a hard heart and you need a new heart. You need your sins forgiven. Only God can forgive our sins!

Meal #4 – Communion (Acts 2:42) This is how we try and do church

·         As God’s people when we take Communion, we’re showing, “I’m friends with Jesus and his people.” You can’t be a Christian and not connected to the church.
·         When we partake in Communion in service or in homes together, what we’re doing is we’re doing it together saying, “I’m friends with Jesus, and I’m friends with you, and I’m part of the family.”
·         Read Verse 2:42-46 Break it Down
·         We are a family that’s not perfect….we will drive each other crazy!!

A Worthy and an Unworthy Way (1 Cor 11:28-32)

·         Explain this text!!!
·         ITS ABOUT REPENTENCE!!!
·

Meal #5 – Wedding Supper of the Lamb (Revelations 19:6-9)

·         We start with a party and the bible ends with a party!!
·         It ends with a huge party where we are reconciled with Jesus as His bride!
·         It’s all about Jesus; it’s always been about Jesus!!
·         Revelation 19:6–9 (ESV)
6 Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out,
“Hallelujah!
For the Lord our God
the Almighty reigns.
      Let us rejoice and exult
and give him the glory,
for the marriage of the Lamb has come,
and his Bride has made herself ready;
it was granted her to clothe herself
with fine linen, bright and pure”—
for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.
9 And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”
